We would like to honor Gene Shoemaker, co-discoverer of "Shoemaker-Levy 9",
and first to champion the battle against massive scientific opposition and
prove that an asteriod had hit the earth (using Meteor crater as proof)
astronomer, and inspiration who recently passed away June (19?) 1997 due
to an unfortunate and untimely automobile head-on collision.
Also a belated and long overdue honor of the memory of Carl Sagan, who brought
us the wonder of the "billions and billions" of the stars to us all.
Astronomer, spokesperson, author of such books a Cosmos
(including the PBS series, with the same name) and Contact
now out in movie format starring Jody Foster), and inspiration to us all.
We will miss him but his powerful legacy will continue in those of us he touched.

Imagine a meteor approximately a mile or so in diameter appearing out of the night sky, preparing to hit the earth. We learned about it a few months prior to it happening thanks to a handful of astronomers (most likely a watchful backyard astronomer!), but we cannot respond to it or defend against it, we can only watch. The meteor hits San Francisco, killing millions of people immediately, total death toll: over 1 BILLION. Beyond the immediate death toll, the events subsequent to the meteor crash change the climate and topography of the earth, perhaps for decades or more. The debris spewed into the air by the collision are so thick they block the sun for months. Although temperatures initially soar due to fire and sparks spewing into the atmosphere causing massive fires on land, later the temperatures will fall globally in the equivalent of a nuclear winter. Gargantuan tidal waves are likely initially, and temperature as well as chemical changes in the atmosphere would cause agriculture to cease. The survivors have to fight for the remaining but disappearing vegetation and deal with an increasing bitter cold signaling a potential oncoming ice age.
Sound incredible? On Mar 23rd 1989 an asteroid the size of an aircraft carrier barely missed the earth if it would have hit it would wiped out hundreds of miles.. In 1908, a large meteor crashed in uninhabited Siberia and laid waste to miles of forest land. In the summer of 1994 comet Shoemaker-Levy collided with Jupiter, leaving scars larger than the size of our planet on its surface. If Shoemaker- Levy had been coming toward the earth, we probably would not have enough time to respond, even if we knew what response to make. Many scientists believe that a large meteor collision was responsible for the disappearance of the dinosaurs. It is thought that a meteor only a mile in diameter could be disastrous and end life as we know it on earth.
To leading astronomers of the day, there is no question that the earth WILL be hit. It is not a matter of if, but WHEN. It is possible for us to avoid these scenarios, and we are perhaps the only species that could detect and possibly respond to such a threat. But we must act NOW!
YOU can make a difference:
If just One N.E.O.s (Near Earth object) or E.C.A.'s (Earth-crossing asteroid) is detected because of our efforts (and we'll let you
know if it is!!), you will have literally helped save the earth.
Scientists say that 6 months to a year is not enough time to prepare -
depending on the size of the object, it may require 5-10 years to avert the
disaster, thus we must ACT NOW .
Very limited funding is available currently: Less than 1/40th of a single space shuttle launch is spent on asteroid and comet research to adequately warn us or allow us time to react. Please write or e-mail your congressman requesting additional funding for NASA to increase their Planetary Defense Watch efforts.
If you need help with your
congressman's street or e-mail address Remember to include your name and address,"Because this
program is intended to provide an additional vehicle for
Congressional representatives to communicate with their
constituents, it is critical that you include your name and
address in your mail message, preferably at the top of the
message. Most Congressional offices have adequate staff
resources to respond only to their constituents and your
inclusion of your full name and mailing address will insure
that your Congressperson can identify your residence within
his or her Congressional District".
A suggested sample skeleton is provided is provided that you may use to send Stay tuned for information on where you can directly send your contributions to help fund this effort.

Shoemaker Levy 9
Discoverers: Carolyn Shoemaker/Gene Shoemaker/David Levy
The comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, consisting of 21 discernible fragments, scarred the planet Jupiter in 1994.
The effect of the impact of a single fragment, Fragment G, of Shoemaker-Levy was equivalent to exploding a bomb the size of the one that hit Hiroshima every second for 10 days.
The Shoemaker-Levy comet was detected less than 1 year before it hit, and, had it been heading for earth rather than Jupiter, scientists think this would not be enough of a warning for us to do anything.
Most of the fragments that impacted Jupiter up to 2 km in size. Yet they devastated areas over 100,000 times larger than the actual size of the impacting body. At least one fragment left scars on Jupiter the size of the earth.
Finally, this from a Shoemaker-Levy homepage: "Comet Shoemaker-Levy vs. planet Jupiter is the most spectacular catastrophe since Godzilla vs. Tokyo."

DINOSAURS DISAPPEARANCE EXPLAINED
Many scientists believe that 65 million years ago a meteor hit the earth, probably in the area of the Yucatan peninsula, with a force equivalent to all the earth's nuclear arsenal. This meteor is thought to have been 6 miles in diameter, and is believed to have killed all the dinosaurs and 75% of all life on earth. Evidence that the earth was hit by at least one object in recent past include:
Twa Flight Explained
On June 17, 1996, East Moriches, NY TWA flight 800 crashed and 230 people died. 1 year later, the examination of the crashed vessel, collected at West Hampton beach, and conducted at Long Island, at a cost of over 27 million dollars, involving 600 FBI agents, 25 YRI investigators, later, what exactly happened is still speculative at best.
